Canada Bans BPA: Canada has become the world leader in its crackdown on Bisphenol A (BPA) by declaring it a toxic chemical! Widely used to harden plastics and line food and beverage containers, BPA has shown to be present in 91% of Canadians. The primary health concern: BPA’s potential effects as an endocrine disruptor, which can mimic or interfere with the body’s natural hormones and potentially damage development, especially in young children.
For more info and to learn about the risks of BPA, check out the full report by the National Workgroup for Safe Markets called No Silver Lining.
Breathe Easy: Enjoying a breath of fresh air isn’t always possible, depending on where you live. And the air quality inside your home is often just as bad, if not worse. Since many of us spend so much time indoors, NASA conducted a two-year study to find out which plants were best to filter the air by producing Oxygen from CO2, and absorbing benzene, formaldehyde and/or trichloroethylene. Now we can all breathe easy!

Butt Out! The Canadian and American governments have been cracking down on public smoking for quite some time now. The latest: New York City’s mayor, Michael Bloomberg, is banning smoking in parks and city benches, primarily because of the adverse health effects of secondhand smoke. Do you think this ban is a little harsh for addicted smokers? Visit www.treehugger.com and weigh in or simply see what everyone else is saying.
