Celebrate Earth Day 2011!

Spring is a time when we come out of hibernation, stripping off our heavy coats & boots and replacing them with cute dresses, capris, and sunglasses—the latest in spring fashion, of course! With the warmer air, sunshine, scent of flowers, and birds chirping enthusiastically, we can’t help but feel lighter and happier. And this puts us in the perfect mind frame to celebrate Mother Earth and all the gifts she bestows upon us.

On April 22 every year, Earth Day is an opportunity to not only celebrate the earth, but to also learn about positive, proactive ways we can help our planet.

The first Earth Day occurred in 1970 in the United States. Since 1990, Earth Day has been an international event celebrated in more than 175 countries every year, reports the Earth Day Canada Organization.

Earth Day has been a positive catalyst for change in many countries. According to the Earth Day Canada Organization, “the global event brought pressure on heads of state to take part in the UN Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro to address issues such as climate change and the world wide loss of species.”

Women comprise more than half the world’s population. They make 85% of all consumer choices. And all over the world, women are rising to key positions of power. This is why, as women, we can be a powerful force for change in the world. As mothers, sisters, daughters, and friends, let’s band together to help raise awareness for our precious planet.

This Earth Day, let’s celebrate and pledge to protect Mother Earth!
